Preparing your walnut orchard for frost or fire damage

Early frost events are a typical concern for walnut orchards, especially in orchards with low-lying or frost-prone areas such as the Sacramento Valley. Fires are a less common occurrence, and while growers in the San Joaquin Valley have luckily not needed to worry about this threat (so far, knock on wood!) it is a worry in the Sacramento Valley, or orchards growing in the fire-prone foothills and coastal regions.
